No longer operating as a prison, Missouri State Penitentiary was originally opened in 1836 and was decommissioned in 2004. The penitentiary is now open for hard hat tours. Before shutting down, Missouri State Penitentiary was the oldest continually operating penitentiary west of the Mississippi. Tours highlight some of its famous inmates from the past such as heavyweight champion Sonny Liston and James Earl Ray.
